Jacket Potato Drop

It’s been a great day for Science in Year 1. We spent a brilliant morning discussing, experimenting and inventing! Our challenge was to investigate materials to see which would make a good protective jacket for a potato (!) being dropped from the Juniors’ tower in the playground. We came up with our own ideas for materials to use and talked about the properties we would look for, such as ‘wrapability’ and potential to protect a potato from exploding on impact. Being outside for this experiment was such fun and when we came back indoors with our findings we had so many thoughts to share. From our class conversation, we found ourselves designing a parachute altogether. We were so enthused and full of imaginative ideas that we set about designing one of our own!
