This week we have been learning about D-Day on the 6th June 1944. Can you write 100 words based around this topic?
Operation Overlord is a codename for the Battle of Normandy, the allied operation that launched the successful invasion of German- occupied Western Europe during world war 11. The operation was launched on the 6th of June 1944 with the Normandy landings.The result of this Battle was a victory for the allied forces. Normandy is in Northern France close to England on a beach with less protection.Although, there were less armaments there was lots of hedgehogs protecting the beach from infiltrating allied ships.The given code names for the beaches were (Omaha, Utah ,American) (Juno ,Canadian) (Gold ,Sword ,English).
The Nazis were winning the war. All of Europe had been occupied and the British were only safe because they were an island. With the introduction of American forces, troops and most importantly money, the Allies started to plan an invasion. Planning, which dated back to 1943 had to be precise in every way. Endless reconnaissance missions and photos poured into the planning rooms. Finally, it was ready. The date of the attack was 5th June 1944. That was until the weather delayed it to the 6th. Shortly after midnight, General Eisenhower gave his consent. D-Day was about to begin.
Water splashing, sick spraying, the boat rocking. My gun strapped to my back, my body leaden, as if I was carrying the weight of the world upon my shoulders. We were half a mile off shore, but time made the boat seem faster, I clung to the edge as if it were a lifeline. The hedgehogs underneath me scratched and scraped at the boat’s rusting underside. Almost at the shore, the mass of sand and anti-aircraft guns strewn over the beach. Other soldiers appeared intrepid, but I was having cold feet as the gangplank lowered onto the dusty sand below.
Operation Overlord was the code name for the Battle of Normandy. Nowadays, we know this as D-Day. Ashamed after Dunkirk, Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower and other important allied people came together to turn things around. There was one thing left to do before attacking. Confuse the enemy. Operation Bodyguard and Fortitude were set up. The latter was to make the Nazis think they were going to attack in Norway. The other was to confuse the enemy into thinking the Allies were going to invade Calais. Once everything was set the allies were ready to go… Oh no. The weather.
