Early Maths in Reception: Playful Precision for a Best Start in Life
This session will explore how high-quality early maths can give every child the best possible start in life, supporting attendance, attainment and inclusion from the very beginning.
Led by headteacher and Camden maths adviser, Natalie Stevenson, the session will demonstrate how structured mathematical games and carefully planned routines build deep number sense, early calculation fluency and mathematical confidence. We will focus on the precise adult interactions and language that ensure all children are challenged, supported and enabled to think like mathematicians, with no learning left to chance.
Participants will visit our Reception classroom to observe maths teaching and learning in practice, seeing how inclusive, joyful maths fosters engagement, strong attendance and sustained progress for all learners. There will be time throughout for professional dialogue, questions and discussion with colleagues.
