Year 1 – Coding!

CODING

Over the last term one maths lesson a week has been Coding.

We have learnt about sequences – the order of events that the computer will carry out. We quickly realised – through a robot jam making session – that computers will carry out commands exactly in the order that they are given.

Over the term we have learnt new programmes, how to write algorithms, what ‘conditions’ and ‘loops’ are and how to de-bug!

First we used Path Puzzler – a maze game by Busy Things.

Then we used Kodable – a more sophisticated maze game. In this game we started to write our first algorithms. We used ‘conditions’ and ‘loops’.  If we made a mistake we learnt how to de-bug. We also learnt that ‘Coders’ take the shortest routes!

Next we used Probots (see photos). We programmed these cars to travel around our local area. WE wrote longer algorithms, used turns and estimated / measured distances.

We are now using Tiny Tap – this programme allows us to make our own games! We are creating a game about our local area. As well as programming our game – we are also using other ICT features like – Dropbox, recording our voices and editing text. Once finished we will try and upload onto Eleanor Palmer website.
